Website

The Counterfeiters is the true story of the largest counterfeiting operation in history, set up by the Nazis in 1936. Salomon "Sally" Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) is the king of counterfeiters. He lives a mischievous life of cards, booze, and women in Berlin during the Nazi-era. Suddenly his luck runs dry when arrested by Superintendent Friedrich Herzog. Immediately thrown into the Mauthausen concentration camp, Salomon exhibits exceptional skills there and is soon transferred to the upgraded camp of Sachsenhausen. Upon his arrival, he once again comes face to face with Herzog, who is there on a secret mission. Hand-picked for his unique skill, Salomon and a group of professionals are forced to produce fake foreign currency under the program Operation Berhard. But while Salomon attempts to weaken the economy of Germany's allied opponents, he must decide whether his actions, which could prolong the war and risk the lives of fellow prisoners, are ultimately the right ones.

Academy Award Winner 2008 for Best Foreign Film.

Now showing at
LUNA ON SX
WINDSOR CINEMA

This is a self-described "fairy tale for adults," set in a Noel Coward London of 1939 with ornate and spacious flats, actresses of easy virtue and lavish cocktails. Guinevere Pettigrew (Fargo's Frances McDomand), a middle-aged London governess, finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job. An attempt to gain new employment catapults her into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Junebug's Amy Adams).

A Secret (Un Secret) (M) 100 mins
Starts Thursday 15th May at
CINEMA PARADISO
Adapted by Claude Miller (The Little Thief) from Philippe Grimbert's autobiographical novel, this is a splendid and moving saga of a Jewish family in post-war Paris, told through the eyes of a frail & intelligent young boy who senses something is amiss with his beautiful parents (Cécile De France & Patrick Bruel). On his fifteenth birthday a family friend tells him a shattering truth - tying his family's past to the Holocaust - that may enable him to develop his own sense of self.

This wholly absorbing tale is a superbly drawn study of human behaviour, featuring excellent supporting performances by Julie Depardieu, Ludivine Sagnier, Mathieu Amalric and Yves Jacques. A Secret was a huge critical and box office success in France last year.
Then She Found Me (M) 100 mins
Starts Thursday 15th May at
CINEMA PARADISO

Adapted from Elinor Lipman's novel of the same name, "Then She Found Me" is Helen Hunt's directorial debut and a hit of the 2007 Toronto Film Festival, with Hunt starring alongside Colin Firth, Bette Midler and Matthew Broderick.

A hilarious and sometimes moving story about a woman (Hunt) in the midst of a unique mid-life crisis. Her world is turned upside down when, in quick succession, her husband (Broderick) leaves, her adoptive mother dies and her real one (Midler), an eccentric talk show host materialises. If this isn't enough trouble, she finds herself falling in love with the shy English guy at her work (Firth) and to make matters worse, she's pregnant. She is a thoroughly modern woman in a thoroughly modern crisis and the only person who understands her is a mother that she has just met and who is quite frankly, really annoying.

Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (Prisoner of the Mountains) illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan (Tadanobu Asano) in his stunning historical epic, Mongol. Based on leading scholarly accounts and written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, Mongol delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162.  As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. Mongol shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor.
