Synopsis

Writer-director Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On: The Grudge is a standout of the flesh-crawling pinnacle of Japanese chillers that swept the globe at the turn of the millennium.

In a nondescript family house in the suburbs of Tokyo, an unspeakable evil resides - its inhabitants are the vengeful spirits of mother Kayoko and son Toshio Saeki, whose tragic fates were sealed by a jealous husband’s murderous rage. Anyone who enters the house, regardless of their innocence or intentions, falls victim to Kayoko and Toshio in gruesome and ghastly fashion.

Shimizu’s disconcerting approach to plotting, unnerving eye for the uncanny details in the dark corners of the frame and an innate talent for effective jump scares so impressed Evil Dead director Sam Raimi that he invited the director to helm two Hollywood remakes.
