For her seventh feature directorial offering, multi-hyphenate Julie Delpy is trying something different, veering away from the lighter, fluffier rom-coms that have marked her earlier efforts and attempting a bold new type of love story. The “Before” actress and “Two Days in New York” filmmaker also stars in the film as Isabelle, a devoted mother going through a wrenching divorce. As bad as her marriage might have been, she got something wonderful out of it: her darling daughter Zoe (Sophia Ally). And yet even that might not be forever.
Ingeniously, tensely plotted, it’s clear from the start that something terrible is going to happen to Isabelle, but Delpy plays with convention and expectation at every turn. Even when it finally hits, Delpy finds new ways to explore a seemingly well-trod story, thanks to her interest in the intersection of technology and emotion. It’s a wild new development in her career that shows a distinct, fresh filmmaking vision, and spells a compelling new chapter in her evolving turn behind the camera.
