Pioneering Maori filmmaker Merata Mita's dream of turning Cousins into a movie ended with her death in 2010. The project was picked up by director Ainsley Gardiner and writer/director Briar Grace-Smith. Cousins is based on Patricia Grace's decade-spanning novel following the fate of three Māori cousins in post-WWll Aotearoa, who grow apart as women but eventually find their long lost connection to one another.
The film is the first directed by a Māori woman since 1988!

Mata, Missy and Makareta are three cousins, separated by circumstances yet bound together by blood. Orphaned Mata believes she has no family, living a lonely life in fear. Educated Makareta flees an arranged marriage with plans to search for her missing cousin - leaving behind the dutiful Missy. As the year's pass, the loss of their family land seems imminent and the woman's promise to bring their stolen cousin home seems more unlikely than ever until a chance encounter changes everything.

A hit in New Zealand, Ainsley Gardiner and Briar Grace-Smith direct RachelHouse, Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne and Ana Scotney in a moving drama of the powerful bond between family members despite the tyranny of time and distance.

Some Maori language, English subtitles
