Brendan mans the quietest toll booth in Wales, hiding from his criminal past. When he finally gets spotted, his enemies converge. Eventually, everybody is going to pay the toll...
A darkly-comic thriller in the vein of The Guard (2011) and Fargo (1996), THE TOLL follows Brendan (Michael Smiley), a solitary figure who mans the quietest toll booth in Wales, hiding from his criminal past. When he finally gets rumbled, word of whereabouts gets out and his enemies head west for revenge. Meanwhile, local traffic cop Catrin’s (Annes Elwy) investigation into a simple robbery sees her heading for the booth at exactly the wrong time… When it comes to the toll, everybody’s going to pay.
Also starring Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones) and directed by Ryan Andrew Hopper in his directorial debut, The Toll is a "West Walian western" dripping with dark humour.
"Taking inspiration from the likes of Fargo, Pulp Fiction and A Fistful of Dollars, the Welsh director's film delivers in being a viciously entertaining and slyly self-aware thriller." - The Upcoming
"Sweet yet cynical, convoluted yet comical, witty yet wild, always punching exactly at its own weight while never staying within genre's boundaries..." Projected Figures
"Make no mistake about it this is a triumph in many ways. It is the feature-length debut for both director and writer." HeyUGuys
"A youthful exuberance in the writing and a high tolerance for eccentricity makes for a certain gauche quality in this energetic West Wales-set crime film, a debut from Ryan Andrew Hooper. " Screen International
