The impressive debut feature from writer-director Jason Raftopoulos, whose most recent short Kin screened at Cannes, was shot in Melbourne and tells the story of a father who has less than a day to pay back a debt to a loan-shark, while at the same time trying to look after his young son. The film received a five-minute standing ovation at its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this year.

We are delighted to have writer-director Jason Raftopoulos and AACTA Nominee for Best Actor Damian Hill, live in cinema to present and talk about West of Sunshine in a Special Q&A screening on Friday 24 August at Luna Leederville following the 6.30pm session.  Tickets at normal cinema prices.

Separated from his family and caught in a cycle of gambling and debt, Jim has less than a day to repay a violent loan shark. His day is turned upside down when he must look after his young son who is on school holidays. Jim’s relationship with his son is tested as his plans to pay back the loan fail. When his last desperate effort to repay the debt puts his son’s life at risk, he must make a choice between his past and a second chance at life.

WEST OF SUNSHINE is a modern-day BICYCLE THIEVES set against an urban backdrop. Shot entirely on location in Melbourne, and using a combination of professional and non-actors, the film is an exercise in modern realism. The film explores contemporary themes of addiction, love and connection.

Featuring a cast that includes the recent AACTA Nominee for Best Actor Damian Hill (Pawno), local actors Arthur Angel (Red Dog), Kat Stewart (Offspring), Tony Nikolakopoulos (Head On) and introducing young talent Ty Perham.

'Sunshine is a timely and intelligent essay on the eternal theme of how fathers can both inspire and alienate their sons.' – Richard Kuipers, Variety
