A Palestinian film about memory, exile, and the unbreakable ties to home: "Some stories are not passed down. They are carried in the body, in the blood, in the silence between fathers and sons."
All That’s Left of You (اللي باقي منك ) is a deeply moving portrait of dispossession, memory, survival, and inheritance, bearing witness to the enduring legacy of Palestinian life and resistance.
Cherien Dabis (Amreeka) directs and stars in this deeply moving epic chronicling the loves, hopes, losses and traumas of a Palestinian family over seven decades.
In the occupied West Bank, 1988, the young man Noor joins a protest that’s met with devastating violence. Flashing forward several decades, we meet Noor’s mother Hanan (Dabis), who relates the story of her son – but in order to do so, she must first go back to 1948, in order to tell the story of his grandfather’s (Adam Bakri) expulsion from Jaffa. Over the decades that follow, the hope of a return to the home in Jaffa remains an aspiration of various members of the family, even as their lives take them further away from it. Through all the disappointments and devastation abides the love story between Hanan and her devoted husband Salim (Saleh Bakri).
“The film is inspired in part by my family,” Dabis has said. “My father is a Palestinian refugee who lived most of his life in exile.” Her personal experience imbues All That’s Left of You with heartbreaking emotion. It is a film that charts the history of a family that has experienced great tragedy, while also offering hope for healing.
