Academy Award–winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) brings her signature poetic touch to this lush, deeply felt drama about William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and the family life that shaped him. Rather than focusing on The Bard’s towering reputation, Zhao turns her gaze to Agnes — Shakespeare’s thoughtful, intuitive wife — played with luminous grace by Jessie Buckley. Through her eyes, the film reframes a household marked by love, longing and loss, revealing the emotional terrain that would echo through Shakespeare’s most enduring work.
Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s celebrated novel, Hamnet suggests that we cannot fully understand Hamlet without first understanding the grief that inspired it. The death of Shakespeare’s 11-year-old son has often been treated as a footnote in history, softened by statistics about childhood mortality. Zhao rejects that distance, instead portraying a family devastated by tragedy and reshaped by its impact. In doing so, she brings Shakespeare down from the pedestal and presents him not as an untouchable literary icon, but as a husband and father whose art was inseparable from his domestic life.
Yet while grief casts a long shadow, Hamnet is far from a story defined by sorrow alone. It is also filled with joy, tenderness, mischief and moments of wonder — the everyday intimacies that stitch a family together. Buckley’s radiant performance gives the film its heartbeat, while Mescal brings a quiet, affecting humanity to Shakespeare himself.
Join us beneath the stars for an evening of music, storytelling and cinematic beauty as Hamnet brings the Bard’s world into vivid, emotional focus.

Reviews
Hamnet is a towering work from Zhao and one of the best movies of 2025.
Hamnet is truly extraordinary. Watching it feels transformative.
To experience Hamnet is to fall in love, to be pulverized by the grand emotions that make us alive.
It’s Buckley who’s giving one of those rare turns that simply beggars belief. She swings back and forth from cast iron to porcelain. The actress is thunderous, playful, grounded and ethereal.
