Oliver Hermanus (Living) brings to life a decades-spanning romance shaped by the transformative power of music, led by an electric Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. The story follows Lionel (Mescal), a gifted singer from rural Kentucky whose childhood is anchored by the songs his father sang on the front porch. In 1917, Lionel leaves home to study at the Boston Music Conservatory, where he meets David (O’Connor), a charismatic young composer who is soon drafted into World War I.
In 1920, the pair reunite for a single winter in the forests and islands of Maine as they collect folk songs in an effort to preserve them for future generations. The season is fleeting, but it forges a connection that echoes through Lionel’s life. As he drifts across Europe during his twenties and thirties—finding success, forming new relationships, and building a life filled with music—he remains haunted by the winter he shared with David, trying to understand the deep and lasting imprint of their brief time together. Only later does a small reminder of their work unveil why their bond resonated so powerfully.
Crafted with breathtaking restraint, Hermanus’ film allows landscapes to become repositories of memory, and lets sound itself carry the weight of longing. The History of Sound is at once an intimate love story and a cultural elegy, a tender meditation on music, memory, and the ways love can endure long after its moment has passed.

Reviews
An ode to love in all its permutations.
The performances are remarkable, particularly Mescal’s.
