Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy (1989), Breaker Morant (1980), and Ladies in Black (2018) and filmed across Perth from Fremantle to York, The Travellers is a poignant, funny and heartwarming family story.
To celebrate Sony Pictures’ The Travellers, we are delighted to partner with West Australian Opera (WAO); who played an integral part in the making of the film. Join us for a pre-film screening conversation, where West Australian Opera's Artistic Director, Chris van Tuinen will share some insights into filming The Travellers’ pivotal opera moments; and his experiences working alongside director, Bruce Beresford. Chris will also explore the significance of Verdi's opera La Traviata; which is central to the plot of the film.
Following the pre-screening talk, West Australian Opera's Jessica Blunt and Tommaso Pollio will perform one of La Traviata’s most memorable arias; and you will also get a sneak peek at WAO's 2026 season.

Stephen Seary (Luke Bracey), a charismatic and successful stage designer, returns to the small town in Western Australia where he grew up to visit his increasingly eccentric father (Bryan Brown), ailing mother and overburdened sister (Susie Porter). What was to be a quick trip descends into chaos as Stephen navigates family responsibilities, old school friends and past lovers, all while trying to return to Europe for a major opera contract.
