Synopsis
A phone-obsessed teen is pulled into a vortex in this genre-bending fable that asks: what might we discover if we finally look up? Imagine is a ground-breaking animated film blending Indigenous knowledge with cutting-edge technology.
Like many teens, 15-year-old Kim is overwhelmed by digital noise, constantly called back to bouts of scrolling by the pings of their phone – until a claw rips through their bedroom and drags them off to a kaleidoscopic otherworld. Like Alice tumbling through the rabbit hole, Kim travels through a vortex-like thoroughfare filled with swirling colours and crazy patterns and sets out on a multi-dimensional journey guided by a wise-cracking alien dog called Jeff. Facing a 24-hour deadline, they must navigate bizarre landscapes and encounter a cast of eccentric characters – from historical figures to cyborg shamans – to complete a quest for freedom and self-discovery, each encounter unveiling deeper truths about nature, time and spirit. Guided by Aboriginal Elders and crossing surreal, symbolic realms Kim confronts their fears and addictions.
Offering sage lessons for a generation seeking clarity in the chaos, Imagine is directed by Jack Manning Bancroft and Tyson Yunkaporta and features an impressive voice cast including Yael Stone, Wayne Blair and guest performers Ian Thorpe and Taika Waititi.
