Synopsis

Australian premiere

Amata

Directed by Elisa Amoruso (Sirley) and adapted for the screen by Ilaria Bernardini from her own novel, Beloved tells an intimate story of maternity through two women from different worlds who are facing opposing fertility struggles.

Nunzia (Tecla Insolia, Primavera) is a 19-year-old student with a crushing secret: an unwanted pregnancy. Alone, she weighs up the difficult decision of whether to keep the baby or give it up. When Nunzia secretly gives birth to a daughter, Margherita, she considers leaving her in the hospital, unsure if she wants to claim her.

Meanwhile, 42-year-old architect Maddalena (Miriam Leone, Miss Fallaci) and her partner Luca (Stefano Accorsi (Diamonds IFF25), are on the verge of adopting a child after struggling with infertility. As the days pass, a chance soon presents itself: delicate, luminous, full of anticipation.

Exploring the complexity of motherhood, love and freedom, Beloved asks uncomfortable yet important questions to deliver a sincere drama about two lives connected by invisible threads and the choices that can change a person’s fate.
