On the screen, Christmas unfolds in all its messy, heartfelt glory with Love Actually, Richard Curtis’ first feature as director and the rom-com that became a modern classic. All of London seems to be in love—or wishing they were—as more than a dozen characters navigate romance, heartbreak and hope during one unforgettable holiday season.

The film brings together an iconic ensemble led by Keira Knightley, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Andrew Lincoln, whose character Mark is quietly, painfully in love with his best friend’s bride. Their story sits alongside that of recent widower Daniel (Liam Neeson), who’s doing his best to help his stepson Sam (Thomas Sangster) summon the courage to confess his feelings to a classmate. Elsewhere, devoted mother Karen (Emma Thompson) wrestles with the painful suspicion that her husband Harry (Alan Rickman) has been drawn toward a younger colleague, while in the same office the lonely and tender-hearted Sarah (Laura Linney) longs for the man just a few desks away, unsure if her complicated life will let love in.

Threaded through it all is the hilarious, washed-up rockstar Billy Mack (Bill Nighy), whose outrageous bid for a Christmas hit provides the film’s offbeat soundtrack—and an unexpected reminder that love can appear in the strangest places.
