Sofia Coppola’s sumptuous reimagining of the life of France’s most infamous queen stars Kirsten Dunst as a teenage Marie Antoinette, whisked from Austria to Versailles and plunged into a world of elaborate gowns, extravagant parties and suffocating royal expectations. Set to a radically anachronistic soundtrack and dripping in pastel decadence, the film transforms the familiar historical figure into an intimate portrait of youth, loneliness and life lived under a very public microscope.
