Synopsis
Three-time Emmy nominee Melanie Lynskey (YELLOW JACKETS, THE LAST OF US) and acclaimed NZ actress Robyn Malcolm (TOP OF THE LAKE, AFTER THE PARTY) star as Anna Osborne and Sonya Rockhouse; Two ordinary women who together stand up and take on the government, the justice system and a company that will stop at nothing to protect itself, in the wake of New Zealand’s deadliest modern mining disaster.
In 2010, 29 contractors went to work, saying “see you later” to their loved ones, but after descending into the Pike River coal mine in New Zealand, the mine collapsed. Never having made it home, families and communities were left questioning, grieving, and angry.
This deeply moving film portrays the friendship that grew between Anna, who lost her husband Milt, and Sonya, who lost her youngest son, Ben. Drawing strength from the other they rebuild their shattered lives and gradually discover the scale of the betrayal they’ve endured. Together they find the courage to fight back against the mining bosses, the judiciary and the government. Their joint efforts shake the nation. Capturing their heroism with great sensitivity, Pike River is an inspiring account of the power of friendship and collective action.

Reviews
Helmed by magnificent performances from Melanie Lynskey and Robyn Malcolm, this fictional retelling is a form of collective closure years in the making.
The story is told with restraint, in meticulous detail... never losing sight of the heartbreak and devastation.
It treats the people and the communities of the coast with palpable aroha and respect.
