Book Tickets
Synopsis
Australian premiere
A riveting historical drama and epic story of love, art and music from director Asier Altuna Iza (Bye Bye Mr. Extebeste!), Karmele is inspired by the award-winning 2016 novel The Hour of Waking Up Together by Kirmen Uribe, and retraces the true story of Karmele Urresti, a nurse forced into exile during the Spanish Civil War.
1937, the Basque Country. Karmele (Jone Laspiur) and her family take refuge in France, after being forced to flee their home due to the events of the Spanish Civil War.
In France, Karmele is contacted by the Basque cultural embassy in exile, whose aim is to fight the war using music and dance. As a result, she meets a professional trumpet player. The two fall in love and build a family, while navigating the tensions between loyalty, love, the personal and the political. After living for some time in Venezuela, the couple return home to fight the dictatorship, with the hope of recovering the home that was taken from them.
